biography

ron arad (israel, 1951) is an internationally recognised architect, artist and designer. son of a painter and a photographer, arad was first educated at the jerusalem academy of art. later, he studied at the architectural association school of architecture in london and became an architect in 1979. in 1981, arad co-founded the design and production studio „one off“ with caroline thorman, and in 1989, ron arad associates architecture and design practice was established.

arad’s constant experimentation with the boundaries and possibilities of materials, from metals to composites, and his radical reconception of the form and structure of objects and buildings, large and small, have put him at the forefront of contemporary design and architecture. as an architect, ron arad is known for his inventive sculptural approach to spaces.

ron arad has won international awards for art, design and architecture, such as the london design medal in 2011. in 2013, the royal academy of art in london honoured him as a royal academician. his art and design works are included in the permanent collections of significant institutions worldwide, including the metropolitan museum of art (new york, usa), musée des arts décoratifs (paris, france), the museum of modern art (new york, usa) and the victoria and albert museum (london, uk) among others. his solo exhibition „no discipline“ opened at the centre pompidou in paris in 2008 and travelled to new york’s moma in august 2010. in 2014, he had a solo exhibition, „in reverse“, shown at the design museum holon and the pinacoteca agnelli, torino.
